Wembanyama wins NBA award with 100% of vote
LONDON, United Kingdom, Apr 21 – San Antonio Spurs centre Victor Wembanyama has been named the NBA’s defensive player of the year.
The 7ft 4in France international is the first unanimous winner in the award’s 43-year history having secured all 100 of the first-place votes.
At 22, he is the youngest player to win the award and the second to win it within their first three seasons, after Spurs legend David Robinson (1991-92).
Wembanyama was the first overall draft pick in 2023 and has led the league in blocks (3.1 per game) for the third straight season.
The two-time All-Star also averaged career highs in points (25.0) and rebounds (11.5), and claimed a steal per game.
“I’m super, super happy to win this award and actually super proud to be the first ever unanimous [winner],” he told NBC.
Oklahoma City Thunder’s Chet Holmgren finished second with 239 points (76 second-place votes), while Ausar Thompson of the Detroit Pistons was third with 60 points (nine second-place votes).
Wembanyama, who is also a Most Valuable Player contender, helped San Antonio post the second-best record in the regular season (62-20) and their defence was ranked third overall.
German NBA legend Dirk Nowitzki told AFP: “I’ve never seen anything like it.
“His defence is so good that he changes the game just by being on the court and taking away some of the lay-ups and twos that other teams would usually take.”
Cavs take charge against Raptors
Wembanyama starred during his play-off debut on Sunday and the first round of the post-season continued on Monday, with the Cleveland Cavaliers taking charge against the Toronto Raptors.
Donovan Mitchell scored 30 points for Cleveland while James Harden added 28 as the Cavs claimed a 115-105 home win to go 2-0 up in the seven-game series.
“They’re one of the greatest (back-courts),” said team-mate Evan Mobley. “It’s hard to stop them because of their offensive prowess. They can make any shot.”
Toronto’s shooting guard RJ Barrett added: “They’re a problem and we’ve got to figure out how to fix that.”
Anthony Edwards claimed 30 points and 10 rebounds as the Minnesota Timberwolves fought back from 19 points down to win 119-114 at the Denver Nuggets and level their series at 1-1.
The Atlanta Hawks also claimed a comeback win on the road, beating the New York Knicks 107-106 to make it 1-1, with CJ McCollum scoring a game-high 32 points.

Sharks call for action over Ethan ‘cheapshot’
The Sharks have reportedly asked the Vodacom URC to investigate the incident that left Springbok star Ethan Hooker with a dislocated shoulder.
During the second half of last Saturday’s match against the Ospreys in Swansea, Hooker sprinted from deep inside his own half to score a try.
Ospreys winger Luke Morgan, who had chased in cover, arrived late and dived onto Hooker after the ball had been grounded, resulting in the injury.

Match officials, including referee Mike Adamson and TMO Andrew McMenemy, reviewed the try for a potential knock-on in the build-up, but did not address the late challenge which left Sharks coach JP Pietersen fuming.
“Ethan’s injury was a massive blow for us,” said Pietersen post-match. “After scoring a try, the rules say you are not supposed to dive on a player. The rules are there to protect players and sadly that did not happen.”
KEO & ZELS: Justice for Ethan Hooker!
According to IOL, the Sharks have asked the URC citing commissioner to review Morgan’s actions.
Sharks management submitted a formal complaint along with medical evidence following the match.
Hooker returned to Durban on Monday and is set to undergo scans to determine the full extent of the damage and a recovery timeline.

For club, Rayners is currently 15 goals across all competitions even when accounting for his brief time away due to illness. His league performance has been particularly impressive, as he sits as a top contender for the Golden Boot with 11 goals in the Betway Premiership.
Since his return to the pitch, he has maintained a high level of impact, most notably evidenced by a prolific run in March 2026 where he scored 5 goals in just 4 matches.
But bizzarely, coach Hugo Broos has been igoring the Sundowns striker. According to his former coach Mgqithi, Rayners is needed at Bafana ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in June.
MANQOBA MNGQITHI ON WHY MAMELODI SUNDOWNS STRIKER IS NEEDED BY BAFANA BAFANA
“But the personnel will be identified by the personality that we want to take and the identity of the team because the team personality will indicate exactly what type of strikers do we have,” Mngqithi told the Arrows Podcast, as quoted by Soccer Laduma.
“In my opinion, a striker like Iqraam Rayners is still amongst the best for the type of national team and the personality that I think we need to have because we need to consider the ability to play in the space behind.”
“I think that was shown even in AFCON when we played with a Moremi to demand the space behind, we can be stronger against bigger nations when we play with an Iqraam.”
“When we want to play with Lyle Foster, we must not work him opposite his strengths,” the former Sundowns mentor added.
