Charlotte Edwards delivers throwdowns as Beaumont prepares for Lord’s farewell

With Team India opting not to train on the eve of the historic Test at Lord’s, England went through an intense practice session. Every player attended and followed their usual routines, with the batters and bowlers spending time in the nets before moving on to fielding and wicketkeeping drills.

Batters such as Heather Knight and Amy Jones spent a considerable amount of time in the nets at the Nursery Ground. However, all eyes were on Tammy Beaumont. On July 8, the veteran opener announced that the upcoming Test at Lord’s would be the final international match of her 17-year career.

There could hardly be a more fitting stage for her farewell. For the first time, Lord’s is hosting a Women’s Test, and Beaumont will be part of that historic occasion. Now, her only aim will be to sign off with a memorable contribution.

Interestingly, Lord’s has not been Beaumont’s happiest hunting ground in England colours. In five ODIs at the venue, she has scored just 101 runs at an average of 20.2 without registering a half-century. With one final opportunity at the Home of Cricket, Beaumont looked fully focused during England’s practice session.

She batted against a throwdown specialist and was regularly seen discussing her technique with the support staff after every few deliveries before returning to the crease to work on their feedback. Around 10 to 15 minutes into her session, head coach Charlotte Edwards walked to the edge of the net to watch Beaumont bat closely. She applauded a few well-timed shots before warming up and eventually taking over the throwdowns herself.

It was a special sight. The moment reflected a relationship that has evolved over the years but remains just as strong.

Edwards and Beaumont once opened the batting together for England in seven ODIs. One of those matches came against India at this very venue on 1 July 2012, when Edwards was leading the side as captain. Fourteen years later, on 9 July 2026, the two were once again at Lord’s against the same opponents, but in very different roles. Edwards is now England’s head coach, while Beaumont remains one of the most experienced batters in the squad. The bond and mutual understanding between the two were evident throughout the session.

After Beaumont finished batting, Edwards called in two net bowlers—an off-spinner and a left-arm orthodox spinner. It appeared to be a deliberate move, with India expected to rely on similar options through Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana and N. Sree Charani.

With that, Beaumont’s final practice session in England colours came to an end. All eyes now turn to July 10. A historic day for women’s cricket awaits at Lord’s, and for Beaumont, it will also mark the final chapter of a remarkable 17-year international career. Whether she finishes on the winning side or not remains to be seen, but she now has one final opportunity to leave the international stage with a performance to remember.
